Fox News and Outfoxed

Today we continued our conversation about bias. Students listened to the Eagles' song Dirty Laundry. They chose passages to discuss and made conclusions about the meaning of the song. We discussed news, information, entertainment and info-tainment in the media. Students watched the the beginning of the film Outfoxed which explores bias in Fox's presentation of the news. Students completed this film guide as they watched. Students are also expected to detect the bias of the filmakers.

Political Spectrum

Agenda:
  1. Students took the name quiz, writing down the names of all the students in the class.
  2. Students finished the political spectrum quiz and took notes in their logbooks determining values of the left and right, conservatives and liberals.
  3. Afterwords, they took notes on the vocabulary: Media, Conservative, Liberal, Subjective, Objective, Bias.

Bias

Today students looked at bias by reading two different articles written about the fictitious Sam Hughes. Students also compared the story of the Three Little Pigs with "The Real Story" from the wolf's perspective. Students were introduced to the terms: bias, subjective, objective, and perspective. We talked about where bias can be found today. Primarily in the media.

Remember to bring classroom supplies to 2nd period tomorrow.

Names

Today we finished classmate introductions and did the name game. Next week there will be a quiz over student names, so if you don't know someone, go and introduce yourself.

Remember to bring a composition book and classroom materials with you on Monday. These things will be checked off.
