Today students participated in a simulation of the 1932 Reichstag election in Germany.

Weimar Germany
Today students learned about the Weimar period in Germany (1918-1933). Student began by copying down a series of timelines, organizing events from class. They wrote down some key vocabulary and read an article about the time period, answering questions on a worksheet.

Animal Farm
Today students continued reading Animal Farm. Students read through chapter 5. Students then compared the events in the book to those of the Russian Revolution. Students began working on two-sided posters comparing characters from the book to people and groups from the Russian Revolution.

Animal Farm
Agenda 2/7/13:
- Students began reading the first five chapters of George Orwell's allegory about the Russian Revoution Animal Farm.
- As students read they took notes on one character and drew parallels to historic events from Russian history. In their logbooks they drew two timelines: one for the history of the Russian Revolution and the other for the book. Historical events included: Marxism/Theory of Communism, Policies of the Tsar, Fall of the Tsar, Stalin vs. Trotsky, Civil War, Industrialization & 5 year plans, Stalinism & the NKVD, and the exile of Trotsky.

Stalinism
Today students learned about Joseph Stalin and the state of terror he created in the Soviet Union. Students participated in a brief simulation of the secret police climate in the USSR. Next, the read about the purges under Stalin. Students then wrote a postcard to Stalin from the perspective of someone living in 1930s Soviet Union. I stressed the differences between Stalinism and Communism. Students can watch the following clip for more information.
